15TH / 16TH CENTURY
"Hannants, hailed from Hainault, representing the usual early pronunciation of the place-word. The old enrolled forms are De-Hanoie and De-Henau", from English Surnames by C.W. Bardsley, published 1873.

In the 15/16 Centuary Belgium was the Spanish Netherlands, the Hannants where "non-conformists" who moved to England to avoid religious persecution.
